Excerpts From the Book
Epilogue
The architecture of the Kastro, the collective fortification characteristic of the Aegean archipelago, succinctly conveys the conditions that governed life
in the post-Byzantine Aegean region. The Kastro brings into an enviable architectural balance its citizen’s need for security with the islands limited
economic resources and building materials and their natural assets of site and climate. This fine balance also depends on the unique Aegean shoreline as
it defines the intricate relations between landscape and seascape that distinguish the region. (Page 351)
